Tips

Tips for better results

  • Keep it simple. A favicon is tiny. A bold shape or one letter reads better than a detailed logo.
  • Use a square image. Start from a square logo of at least 512 by 512 pixels for the sharpest result.
  • Add padding. A little space around the logo stops it touching the edges, especially in a circle.
  • Test on light and dark tabs. A transparent icon with dark lines can disappear on a dark browser theme.
FAQ

Favicon questions

How do I make a favicon from an image?

Drop your logo on the tool, choose a shape and background, then press Download. You get favicon.ico, PNG icons in the sizes browsers and phones need, a web manifest and the HTML to paste into your site.

What size should a favicon be?

The classic size is 32 by 32 pixels, and favicon.ico usually holds 16, 32 and 48. Phones and Google also use a 180 by 180 Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 pixel icons. This tool makes them all.

Which file formats do I get?

A multi-size favicon.ico, PNG files (16, 32, 48, 180, 192 and 512 pixels) and a site.webmanifest file.

Where do I put the favicon files?

Upload them to the root folder of your website, then paste the HTML snippet into the head of your pages. The snippet is in the tool.

Can I use a letter or an emoji as a favicon?

Yes. Switch to Text or emoji, type one to three characters, and pick the colors. It's a quick way to get a clean favicon if you have no logo yet.

Can I keep a transparent background?

Yes, for the browser icons. The Apple touch icon is always filled, because iPhones show transparency as black.

Why doesn't my new favicon show up?

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Clear the cache or open the site in a private window, and make sure the HTML points to the new file.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The icons are made in your browser and your image never leaves your device.
